The Warranty:

Valuable money-saving advice to arm yourself against a fear based unscrupulous attack on your wallet, along with great news on how to get a free warranty extension!

Ever notice how much this word looks like WARNING? Well, I can’t help you here – your comfort and financial level will have to guide you. Just know that stores often make more money selling extended warranties (service plans) that selling the product itself. Because most folks don’t need them or use them. Their associates are trained to cast doubt in your mind as you check out.

In my personal experience I can tell you that most electronics either work correctly or don’t, right out of the box – and most manufacturers have a 30 day return policy.

That said, I have had now – 6 TiVo boxes. The first two were sold as new, but weren’t – I took them back. The third worked for about 2 years then the modem in it died. The 4th worked for about a year and a few months, when the hard drive died. The 5th was broken out of the box. The 6th is holding up.

If you do MAIL ORDER, be sure this is clarified up front – if you accept a shipped item and it fails, are you out shipping to return it?

If you DO extend the warranty, be sure to completely understand the terms before you buy.

Save all paperwork!

Open carefully - then - Save all packing materials!

If you use a credit card you may be eligible for their FREE extra year warranty extension. But you'll need all the paperwork.

Be wary of extended warranty - a profit center for many stores. If you are tempted, take the contract home and read it before agreeing. DON'T "buy it" at the check out counter!
