Satellite vs. Cable

Cable versus Satellite: The great war for your money. Discover the best choice for you.

Consider: A Cable TV customer at $50 a month (nicely rounded) is $600 a year. Is $6000 (minimum, with rates and extras) in ten years. 10 million of you would represent an income of 6000 x 10,000,000 or

$60,000,000,000.
That’s $60 BILLION. That’s why you keep seeing cable versus satellite ads on TV. And why Telephone companies want in for a slice of the pie. The simple fact is relatively few people watch TV over-the-air any longer. The Consumer Electronics Association's new survey found that of the nearly 110 million American homes with at least one TV, 87 percent are receiving local and national broadcast programming via cable or satellite. That leaves only 13 percent by over the air (antenna). By the way, at $600 a year that’s
$660,000,000,000
in ten years: $660 BILLION!!!

Watch this trend!
As of spring 2005, and according to the Consumer Electronics Association, 60% of American households are hooked up to.... CABLE! 24% to Satellite service. BUT DirecTV boosted subscriptions by 14% and EchoStar (DISH Network) claimed a 15% jump in the first quarter, year-to-year.

Issues fueling your cable vs. satellite decision include...

Which one will carry enough high definition programming to satisfy you?

Will LOCAL channels be carried in high def?

Do they degrade the picture somehow (to stuff more data into the pipe?)

And the ever-popular HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

In this section, we’ll explore:

Cable:
A wire with a string attached: most of their program acquisition is OFF SATELLITES
CableCard:
A superiority complex. Why cable companies don’t want you to get one. And why you should wait for the Next Generation.
Satellite:
What goes up must come down, so why don’t the prices?
The Set Top Box:
A Pandora’s box of conversions, connections and conundrums.
