THE PARADE OF THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY!

Finally we can see the future and frankly, it’s exciting. In the Home Theater biz, the only constant is change.

You can almost always be assured what you buy now will be superceded in a short time by something even better and usually cheaper too.

A survey cited on our home theater blog says that many people who have HDTVs aren’t happy with them because they aren’t actually watching HDTV and don’t know it. Now that’s an eye opener for the sellers out there in retail land, isn’t it!? 28% of HDTV owners reported that they did not get any special equipment from their service provider to watch HDTV channels because the picture quality was already improved with the purchase of an HDTV!

Won’t they be surprised when they hook up an HD or Blu-Ray DVD player and play a great Hi Def movie!

Some developments are about to break into the supply chain and wow us all:

Everything is going wireless!
More wireless: from Avega, the world’s first Wi-Fi surround speaker system. HANNSvidilink: wireless tv transmitter and receiver – feed the whole house. Wireless (ultra wideband) HD streaming is coming via the EWC (Enhanced Wireless Consportium) which has agreed to specs. Circa 2007 chipsets will make wires go away.   That will lead to advances in whole house "servers" which will combine everything.

Tiny Amplifiers!
We’ve already glommed onto Class D amplifiers – they are tiny, powerrful, efficient and cool and soon to be everywhere.

SED
SED… (surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) is like Plasma, but better. Toshiba and Canon have been sleeping together! 100,000:1 contrast ratio promised! 1ms response time!  Toshiba and Cannon are having a snit.  Toshiba is selling off its part.

HIGH DEF DVD audio
Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master – the sound side of new high def DVDs to blow you away! Wait for HDMI 1.3 if you can, because that gets you better sound DolbyTrueHD.  You will start to see products trickle in then in fall they will be all over.

Goodbye Color wheel and projection bulb replacement!

Phlatlight photonic lattice! This is a solid state light source which will replace projecvtion bulbs. Single chip RPTV DLPs will no longer need a color wheel, because the lights can switch much faster (8x) than the color wheel. Good for 20,000 hours with no fade! (Red, Green and Blue LEDS)   A trend: 120 hz screen refresh rate instead of 60hz.

MORE CONTRAST

Different schemes are being employed.  Among them: auto iris, selective dimming/brightening of light source in screen areas dependant on picture.

THINNER

Rear screen projectors are getting svelte - down to 11 inches on some models.

PLASMA 1080p

Panasonics will be out summer of 07.

SUPER DUPER HIGHEST DEF

DING DING DING! Westinghouse has a quad prototype LCD panel with 4 times the res of 1080P!

HIGH DEFINITION DVD

Blu-Ray DVD is out. HD-DVD is out.  A player that plays both is out, though it doesn't have full interactive functionality and a limited feature set.

Samsung's second gen BD-P1200 Blu-ray disc player uses the Silicon Optix HQV chip  ($60,000 worth of pro processing on a chip!) HDMI 1.3.  Lists at $799

And last but not least!

SONY claims to have a technology which will deliver pictures and sound to your brain without screens or speakers.  Years away, but... (patents #6,536,440 and 6,729,337)
