Headphones: Passport to another reality
The inner world becons! Headphones are SO much more than what comes with a iPod!
A radio story.
Once upon a time, say, in the early 60s and before, most radio deejays used what were called Clevite-Brush crystal 'phones or "cans". They were really very BRIGHT SOUNDING and the disc jockeys would have them very loud so they could impress themselves with their vocal tones. Many went deaf.
So, the first rule is - when you play with headphones, boys and girls, you risk hearing damage if you listen at too high a volume for too long.
The second rule REPEALS Mom's rule that you should not ever put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear (or your sister's ear.) If you stick to this, you are missing out on earbuds and so forth.
Oh heck, let's go for three: BASS comes from bigger bass drivers inside the headphones OR from a tighter seal with the ear OR from bass boost in the circuitry. The latter usually sounds awful. It's the equivalent of the tricked out stereo system the kid down the street drives - you know - you can hear him coming for a mile and it's all bass.
DID YOU KNOW that when you speak, you hear yourself two ways? True! Through the air and through the jawbone. That's the main reason why when you hear yourself recorded you go, "Eeeeuuuuw, do I really sound like THAT?" That's because on the speaker or headphone you aren't hearing yourself through bone conduction.
In this section we'll let you in on various ways you can enjoy The Best Of Led Zeppelin while your wife snoozes on the beach chair beside you as you check out the bikinis and you think "If I was xx years younger, we'd only be x years apart and then..."
