CABLE-TV
A wire with a string attached: most CABLE-TV program acquisition is OFF SATELLITES!
Cable television, formerly known as Community Antenna Television or CATV, was born in the mountains of Pennsylvania in 1948. This was created to help sell TV sets in areas with poor reception due to mountains or distance. This was later expanded to apartment buildings, putting all TV on a master antenna. Cable enjoyed an early start in the television-to-your home industry, but that carries both an advantage and a disadvantage.
Advantage:Usually, "first in, wins." More channels were available than could possibly be had by your roof top antenna, which in some areas had to be rotated to point at the various TV transmitting towers.
Disadvantage:Flash forward to today - all that copper wire needs to be replaced or repurposed to handle high streams of digital programming, namely, that bandwidth buster: High Definition.
Cable-TV has become interactive – you can order programming from your easy chair, and now can start, stop, or pause movies as you wish.

This just in... (July 2005) Washington, DC – The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted rules related to the cable carriage of digital broadcast television signals. In addition to resolving a number of technical and legal matters, the FCC’s action clarifies that a digital-only TV station, commercial or non-commercial, can immediately assert its right to carriage on a local cable system. The FCC also said that a TV station that returns its analog spectrum and converts to digital operations must be carried by local cable systems. This action is one of a series of steps to facilitate the transition from analog to digital television broadcasting. This transition will ultimately expand consumer choice of video programming and other services. The transition from analog to digital will allow for more efficient use of the spectrum that will permit new communications and video services in parts of the spectrum returned to the FCC for auction to new competitive providers.
